Three jobs, and only one of them is a guide
Read the included column on any two of our boat days and you will find different words doing different work. One says crew. One says guide. One says animation team. They are not synonyms, and the difference is not marketing — it describes what will happen to you between the swim stops.
A crew sails the boat, anchors it, serves the food and looks after the deck. Every boat has one, including the days whose included list never spells it out. A guide is an extra person whose job is the day rather than the vessel: explaining, answering, and — on the days with a land half — walking you through a market or a restaurant stop. An animation team runs games, music and the foam party, and on the themed boats it is not a bonus at the side of the day, it is the reason the day exists.
Once you sort the catalogue by which of the three it names, the shape of your holiday changes. Below is that sort, done from our own records rather than from impressions.
The days that put a guide in the included list
The pattern is clear once you see it: guides cluster on the days that go somewhere. All three market and bazaar days list one — the Side departure records a friendly, experienced local guide throughout the day and calls the cruise fully guided, the Belek market day lists an English-speaking guide for the whole day, and the Alanya bazaar day lists a friendly English-speaking guide too.
The canyon days are the second cluster, though not all of them. The Green Canyon cruise from Antalya lists an English-speaking guide, the day from Alanya lists a friendly local guide, the Green Canyon day from Kumköy lists a professional English-speaking guide, the Green Canyon day from Belek lists professional local guide assistance, and the half-day catamaran from Evrenseki lists a professional tour guide throughout the day. These are days with a drive, a reservoir, a restaurant or a set of stops that benefit from someone telling you what you are looking at. The exception is worth knowing: the Green Canyon catamaran from Side names no guide in its included list at all, which fits a boat the record sells as a music-free cruise.
A few sea days carry one as well, and it is worth noting which: the Side Starcraft day lists a professional tour guide on board, the relax cruise with waterfall views lists a professional guide throughout the day, the Suluada day from Side is sold as a guided cruise, the Caretta Bay day from Side names guides in its included list, and the Dolphin Island day lists professional guiding on board. If having someone to ask matters to you, those are the sea days that record it.
The days that list a crew and nothing more
This is not a downgrade, and it is worth saying plainly because the included lists can read like a scorecard. The classic Side boat tour lists a professional, friendly crew. The Side island day lists a friendly, experienced crew. The Kumköy sea cruise lists an English-speaking crew. The Alanya fishing boat lists an experienced boat crew and a friendly skipper, which is exactly the right staffing for a day whose content is a rod in your hands.
On a day built around swimming, lunch and the coastline, a guide has comparatively little to explain — the water is the programme. The relax boat from Side is the clearest case: it lists a crew and a service team, and its whole concept is that nobody interrupts you. Adding a commentary to that day would spoil the thing you paid for.
The charters sit in the same column for a different reason. A private yacht, the gulet and the motor yacht all list a captain and crew, and the person shaping your day is you — though the records say it differently for each. The gulet puts route and pace in your hands outright. The private yachts describe a captain who tailors the route and the swim stops to your wishes, weather permitting, within the cruising area. The motor yacht settles the menu with you in advance and offers a sunset return on request. What none of them puts on board is a guide with a commentary.
The animation team, and what it actually does
On the themed boats the entertainment staff are the product. The Side pirate ship lists professional guides, an animation team and free face painting for children, plus a foam party and dance entertainment on deck. The Little Pirates day lists a treasure hunt, onboard games and pirate costumes for the children, with the crew staying in character all day. The Alibaba galleon from Belek lists foam party, music and pirate animation together as one line.
In Alanya the same job is described as an English-speaking animation crew on the pirate galleon and as an English-speaking crew and animation team on the Starcraft. After dark it changes shape again: the Alanya disco yacht lists a live DJ, an animation team and a foam party show, and the Side night cruise lists a live DJ performance and dance shows.
The practical point is that animation is not background. If your ideal day is quiet, a boat whose included list names an animation team is telling you something important, and you should believe it.
The language question, answered from the record
This is the question the record answers only partly, so here is exactly what it does and does not say. Seven of our days specify English: the Alanya pirate galleon and the Alanya Starcraft describe English-speaking animation staff and crew, the Kumköy sea cruise names an English-speaking crew, and the Alanya bazaar day, the Belek market day, the Antalya canyon day and the Green Canyon day from Kumköy each name an English-speaking guide. The rest name a guide or a crew without naming a language at all.
What our records do not contain anywhere is a German-, Russian- or Polish-speaking guide on a shared boat. We are not going to invent one. If a guide in your own language is important to your day — and on a market day with two hours of shopping it reasonably might be — ask us about your specific date before you reserve rather than assuming it from a booking page.
What is in four languages is us. Reservations and questions are handled in English, German, Russian and Polish, so the planning conversation happens in your language even where the deck does not. On a charter the question changes shape again, because you are dealing with one captain for your group and the arrangement can be discussed in advance.
Choosing on this one line
If your day has a land half — a market, a waterfall stop, a restaurant on a reservoir — pick a day that lists a guide, because that is the half where a guide earns their place. If your day is swimming, lunch and coastline, a crew is the correct staffing and the absence of a guide is not something to worry about.
If you have children who want to be busy, read for the animation team and treat it as the headline rather than the footnote. And if you want the day shaped around your group and nobody else, the charters put a captain and crew at your disposal and leave the programme to you.
